We Are the Champions…

June 22, 2013

When the Miami Heat won the NBA championship on Thursday I was immediately reminded–by Laura–of the Queen anthem of the above title, and it brought back a flood of memories.

As some of you know we lived in Brussels from 1986 to 1988 and during that time did a great deal of traveling in France. The last of those trips, shortly before we moved back to the States, was to the south, to Cannes, in July of 1988. We drove our white Opel Corsa (which had no air conditioning, of course, but did have the optional 1.2 liter engine!), stayed at the deco and fab Martinez Hotel right on the Croissette facing the Mediterranean and had the time of our lives, even though we couldn’t really afford it!

Fast forward 10 years.  We were living in Arlington, VA and booked business class from Dulles to Nice, where we picked up a rental 5-series BMW and made the short drive to Cannes to check into the Carlton, also on the Croissette. It was where we had wanted to stay in ’88, but it’s even more dear than the Martinez. What a difference 10 years can make….

In any case, unbeknownst to us, the FIFA World Cup was under way in France and we arrived in the midst of it. While most of the games were played “up north,” one of the venues was Marseilles, not so far away. Still, we managed to remain insulated from the hoopla–until, that is, France won!

We quickly discovered that the city of Cannes has a public address system with speakers throughout the entire town, and what do you suppose they began blaring constantly that evening?  We Are the Champions, of course!

(By the way, if you haven’t already, check out the band fun’s Some Nights album. The whole album’s terrific but the title track is pretty much a tribute to Freddie Mercury and Queen.)

Further memories were made when we booked dinner at a table on the Carlton’s beach, perhaps one of the most romantic dining venues I’ve ever experienced. And since France had just won the World Cup, the French Air Force version of the Blue Angels put on a show right over our heads just before dusk (which comes late in France in July). That wow-and-a-half experience was followed up with fireworks, set off from a barge in the water perhaps 50 feet away. It was quite a night!

Sweet memories, and a it was sweet victory for the Heat. And that reminds me–White Tie & Tales is finally published! It’s available from Amazon and should be available at the iBook store very shortly. As I said in my last post this book’s a bit darker than Late Boomer or Roomer Has It, but it’s also a somewhat more complex story with several twists and turns, and its really bad bad guy poses a series of challenges for Carina, who is faced with some moral decisions along the way to tracking him down.

Enjoy the book!
